This preserved historic estate was built for lumber baron Nathan Paine and his wife, Jessie Kimberly Paine, with construction beginning in 1927 and designed by architect Bryant Fleming from Ithaca, New York. Revered as an “American Castle,” the Paine features an exquisite 1920’s mansion with historic interiors, an exceptional art collection and seasonal, display gardens.
The three-acre estate delivers an experience that seamlessly blends art appreciation with garden exploration. The mansion and gardens are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making this one of Wisconsin’s most significant cultural destinations where you can wander through both gallery spaces and meticulously maintained outdoor galleries of living art.

French Barbizon Masterpieces: You’ll discover French Barbizon and American landscape artworks throughout the mansion’s period rooms. These 19th-century paintings capture the romance of rural French countryside life and pair beautifully with the estate’s own pastoral setting.
Tudor Revival Architecture: Architect Bryant Fleming varied the house’s interior and exterior architectural features, such as arches, doorways, columns, window panes, and chimney stacks, to give it the appearance of being built over three centuries in evolving English styles. You’ll feel like you’re exploring a genuine English country house that somehow found its way to Wisconsin.
