Picture this: a fire destroys your entire bar in 1992, but instead of rebuilding, you create something even more magical from the ashes. Welcome to the wonderfully weird world of Tom’s Burned Down Cafe on Wisconsin’s Madeline Island, where “rising from the ashes” takes on a whole new meaning.
This isn’t your typical watering hole – it’s a ramshackle paradise built from salvaged materials, tarps, and pure Wisconsin ingenuity that has become one of Lake Superior’s most beloved destinations.
What started as Leona’s bar burning to the ground on May 19, 1992 (thanks to an arsonist, no less) transformed into something extraordinary when owner Tom Nelson decided to embrace the chaos rather than fight it.
Instead of rebuilding walls and a roof, he created an open-air wonderland under tents and tarps that feels part Caribbean beach bar, part Wisconsin dive, and entirely unforgettable.
Signature Drinks & Bar Highlights
Island Punch: The must-try drink that visitors rave about – a potent tropical concoction that perfectly captures the laid-back island vibe. You’ll understand why people specifically recommend this drink after their ferry ride over.
