From 1974 to 1990, The Joynt wasn’t just another college bar; it was a crucial stop for legendary musicians traveling between Chicago and Minneapolis gigs.

Owner Bill Nolte, a visual artist from New York, transformed this intimate Water Street venue into something extraordinary.

Today, while the stage has been boarded up for storage, The Joynt remains an Eau Claire institution where jazz history lives on through yellowed photographs lining the walls.

You’ll find everything from professors and poets to college students and blue-collar folks gathering around the bar, all united by craft beer served in 8-ounce glasses and stories that echo through decades of Wisconsin nightlife.

Drinks & Happy Hour Specials

Craft Beer Selection: You’ll discover eight rotating taps plus 15 specialty beers that focus heavily on regional Wisconsin favorites. The 8-ounce glass pours for $1.50 during regular hours showcase local breweries like Leinenkugel’s, with their Original selling for just 50 cents during happy hour. Regional craft options rotate frequently, giving you fresh choices each visit.

Unbeatable Happy Hour: Every single day from 5-7pm, you can enjoy some of the cheapest drinks in town. The $6 pitcher specials during regular hours become even more affordable during happy hour, making this the perfect pre-game spot before exploring downtown Eau Claire.

Signature Drinks: The bartenders mix exceptionally strong cocktails according to regulars, with Bloody Marys being a particular standout. You’ll find the drink prices refreshingly honest – no inflated craft cocktail pricing here, just quality pours at working-class rates.

The Famous “No Light Beer” Policy: The iconic neon sign behind the bar isn’t just decoration – it’s a philosophy. You won’t find any watered-down options here, only full-bodied beers that complement the bar’s authentic character.

Entertainment & Games

Legendary Jukebox: Volume One magazine consistently ranks The Joynt’s jukebox among the best in town, featuring hundreds of selections spanning decades of music history. For just $1, you can choose from classic hits to contemporary favorites, with the eclectic mix reflecting the bar’s diverse clientele.

Classic Bar Games: The back area houses pool tables, dart boards, and vintage pinball machines that provide entertainment when conversation lulls. These aren’t modern digital versions – you’re playing on authentic equipment that adds to the nostalgic atmosphere.

People Watching: The narrow layout creates an intimate setting where conversations naturally flow between strangers. You’ll witness fascinating interactions between tattooed hipsters, university professors, local artists, and visiting tourists all sharing the same small space.

Atmosphere & Décor

Historic Music Memorabilia: The walls showcase portraits of every jazz, blues, and folk legend who performed here during the venue’s golden concert years. Each photograph tells a story, and bartenders can provide a helpful guide explaining which artists graced this tiny stage.

Eclectic Collections: Above the bar, you’ll marvel at an epic collection of vintage beer cans from decades past, creating a colorful mosaic of brewing history. Postcards from around the world – sent by patrons from Rome to Mount Rushmore – cover wall space, representing a tradition that continues today.

“Lumberjack Revival” Design: The narrow, wood-lined interior creates an intimate cabin-like feeling despite being in downtown Eau Claire. Mismatched seating, stained glass windows, ceiling fans, and dim lighting contribute to the genuine dive bar atmosphere that draws both locals and visitors.

Unique Touches: You’ll notice quirky elements like a vintage barber chair by the entrance, old reference books on shelves (useful for settling pre-Google bar debates), and Robert Crumb underground comic covers framed on walls. Even the floor has stories according to long-time owner Bill Nolte.

Other Considerations

Cash-Only Policy: Bring paper money – credit cards aren’t accepted here. This old-school approach keeps transactions simple and maintains the authentic dive bar experience that regulars appreciate.

Affordable Pricing: You’ll find some of the cheapest drinks in Eau Claire, with $6 pitchers perfect for sharing with friends. The pricing philosophy focuses on accessibility rather than profit maximization, reflecting the bar’s community-focused mission.

Dog-Friendly Environment: Well-behaved canine companions are welcome, adding to the laid-back neighborhood tavern atmosphere. You’ll often see locals bringing their furry friends along for evening visits.

Diverse Crowd Appeal: The clientele ranges from college students to retirees, artists to professors, creating interesting conversations across generational and professional lines. Weekend nights bring more students, while weekday evenings attract a broader local crowd.

Limited Space: The narrow layout can feel cramped during busy periods, but this intimacy is part of the charm. Arrive early on weekend nights if you prefer securing a corner table rather than standing room.

I love writing and I love Minneapolis! My favorite places to explore are charming small towns, vibrant arts scene, and hidden gems anywhere outdoors. Fall foliage with a good documentary is my version of heaven.
