At the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, you’ll descend into the nation’s most completely restored WWII submarine and experience firsthand what life was like for 80 submariners fighting for freedom beneath the waves.
Founded in 1970 as the Manitowoc Submarine Memorial Association, this Smithsonian-affiliated museum has grown into the Midwest’s largest maritime museum.
The centerpiece attraction is the USS Cobia, a National Historic Landmark that sank 13 enemy ships and earned four battle stars during six combat patrols. You’ll walk through the same cramped quarters where brave sailors lived, ate, and slept while defending our nation.
Submarine Experience & Museum Highlights
USS Cobia Tours: You’ll climb down into the actual submarine where every corner tells a wartime story. The guided tours last about 45 minutes, taking you through sleeping quarters with stacked bunks, the engine room with its massive machinery, and the control room with one of the world’s oldest operational radar systems.
Your tour guide shares gripping tales of underwater battles and the daily challenges faced by the 80-man crew living in these tight quarters for months at a time.

Lakefront Location: The museum sits beautifully on the Manitowoc River where it meets Lake Michigan, providing stunning water views that perfectly complement the maritime theme. The freshwater river setting has actually helped preserve the USS Cobia over the decades since saltwater would be far more corrosive.
Historic Significance: You’re standing in a city where 28 submarines were built during WWII by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company. The museum’s location isn’t coincidental – this area played a crucial role in America’s naval defense, making your visit feel deeply connected to this important chapter in history.
Sub Pub Rooftop Bar: After exploring below deck, you can head up to the museum’s rooftop bar for drinks with panoramic views of Lake Michigan. It’s the perfect spot to reflect on what you’ve learned while enjoying the fresh lake breeze.
Educational Atmosphere: The museum maintains a respectful, educational environment that honors the veterans who served while making the experience engaging for all ages. Interactive displays balance fun learning with the serious nature of the submarine’s wartime service.
Other Considerations
Pricing Value: Admission runs around typical museum rates, and most visitors feel the submarine tour alone justifies the cost. The unique opportunity to explore an authentic WWII submarine makes this experience exceptional value compared to standard museums.

Keep Exploring →Physical Requirements: You’ll need to be reasonably mobile for the submarine tour, as it requires climbing steep stairs and stepping through small doorways. The tight quarters might be challenging for those with mobility issues or claustrophobia, but the museum offers accommodations when possible.
Visit Duration: Plan for 3-4 hours to fully explore both the museum exhibits and take the submarine tour. This gives you time to read the detailed displays, operate the steam engine, and thoroughly explore the USS Cobia without feeling rushed.
Family-Friendly Features: The museum excels at engaging all ages with interactive exhibits, hands-on activities, and special accommodations for those with sensory sensitivities. The Children’s Waterways room ensures young visitors stay engaged while learning.
Seasonal Considerations: The museum is open year-round with extended summer hours. Submarine tours run weather permitting, so indoor exhibits provide excellent backup activities during harsh Wisconsin winters.
Parking & Accessibility: You’ll find convenient parking on-site, and the museum works to accommodate visitors with various accessibility needs, though the historic submarine itself has inherent limitations due to its authentic wartime design.
