Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm transforms 21 acres of Washington Island into the Midwest’s largest lavender destination, home to an impressive 20,000 blooming plants that create a sensory experience unlike anywhere else in Wisconsin.

What began as a retirement dream for French-born Martine Anderson has blossomed into Washington Island’s most magical attraction since opening in 2013.

Born in France and raised surrounded by the lavender fields of Provence, Martine convinced her husband Edgar to conduct weather studies and soil tests that proved Washington Island’s climate could support their ambitious vision.

The result is a slice of French countryside transplanted to Door County, where visitors can escape into lavender-scented tranquility just a short ferry ride from the mainland.

Lavender Fields & Distillery Experiences

The farm grows primarily English lavender (80% of plantings) because it’s hardier and sweeter-tasting, perfect for Wisconsin’s climate, while the remaining 20% is aromatic French lavender with its signature stronger scent. Peak blooming typically occurs from mid-June through August, with different varieties flowering at staggered times to extend the purple spectacle.

Pick Your Own Bouquets: During July and August, the U-Pick Field allows visitors to harvest their own lavender bundles, creating the perfect souvenir that captures both the visual beauty and heavenly fragrance of your visit. The farm provides cutting tools and guidance, making this activity suitable for all ages.

Live Distillation Demonstrations: The real magic happens in the Production Barn, where two handmade copper stills imported from Portugal work their alchemy. Each 60-pound batch of harvested lavender is steam-distilled for exactly 110 minutes at 212 degrees to extract therapeutic-grade essential oil containing over 300 naturally occurring constituents.

During August harvest season, you can watch this mesmerizing process daily while breathing in the most incredible aromatherapy session imaginable.

Educational Tours: Farm experts share fascinating insights about lavender cultivation, from planting techniques to the differences between culinary and aromatic varieties. You’ll learn why lavender thrives in sandy, well-drained soil and discover the plant’s surprising connection to the mint family.

Signature Products: Their therapeutic-grade essential oils represent the gold standard in lavender aromatherapy. Popular items include luxurious facial cleansers, anti-puff eye gels, and foaming hand soaps so delightful that kids actually want to wash their hands. All products use natural components including the farm’s own essential oils, leaving skin feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

Le Café Gourmet Treats: The outdoor dining terrace overlooks the blooming fields while serving lavender-infused culinary creations. Don’t miss the famous lavender ice cream that perfectly balances floral notes with creamy sweetness, or the delicate macaroons that dissolve on your tongue. Fresh croissants, baguettes, and specialty sandwiches showcase the culinary versatility of this herb from the mint family.

The Distillery Bar: Sip signature lavender cocktails, local craft beers, and wines while soaking in panoramic field views. The lavender lemonade offers a refreshing twist on the classic summer drink.

Atmosphere & Setting

French-Inspired Design: The fields showcase Martine’s French flair with a large white gazebo and several smaller arbors strategically placed throughout the purple landscape, creating perfect photo opportunities and romantic meditation spots. Edgar’s architectural background is evident in the thoughtful layout that maximizes both beauty and functionality.

Sensory Immersion: The overwhelming lavender fragrance creates natural aromatherapy that visitors describe as instantly calming and mood-lifting. Many guests report not wanting to leave because the incredible scent and visual beauty feel almost otherworldly.

Wildlife Haven: The chemical-free fields attract abundant bees and butterflies, adding movement and life to the purple landscape while supporting local pollinators through sustainable farming practices.

Other Considerations

Pricing & Value: The $5 field entrance fee during peak season represents exceptional value for this unique Midwest experience. While shop prices reflect premium quality, the therapeutic-grade products and artisanal craftsmanship justify the investment for those seeking authentic lavender goods rather than mass-produced alternatives.

Best Visiting Times: Lavender blooms are weather-dependent, typically starting in late June and peaking through July and August. Early morning visits offer cooler temperatures and optimal lighting for photography, while late afternoon provides golden-hour magic.
