The Little Chute Windmill represents one of America’s most remarkable cultural preservation projects – a genuine 1850s windmill design from North Brabant, Netherlands, that was meticulously constructed by fourth-generation millwright Lucas Verbij, then disassembled, shipped across the Atlantic, and lovingly reassembled in Wisconsin.
This isn’t just a replica or decorative structure. You’re looking at the only fully functioning, Netherlands-built working windmill in Wisconsin, a living tribute to the Dutch Catholic settlers who established Little Chute in the 1830s and shaped its character for generations.
The windmill officially opened to the public in 2015 after years of community fundraising and dedication, representing perhaps the most ambitious historical preservation project in the Fox River Valley.
