From Freshly Ground Beef To Nostalgic Crinkle Cut Fries, This West Allis Spot Is Pure Gold

Wisconsin burgers just hit different when they’re made with meat ground fresh daily from your neighbor’s butcher shop.

Archie’s Flat Top opened in 2023 on Becher Street in West Allis, and this nostalgic burger joint has already earned its place among Milwaukee’s must-visit dining destinations.

The restaurant was named after owner Mark Lutz’s daughter’s sheepadoodle, not the TV character many assume.

What makes this place special isn’t just the perfectly smashed patties with those crispy, craggy edges that serious burger lovers crave.

It’s the thoughtful attention to quality ingredients and the unique dual concept that pairs handcrafted burgers with artisanal ice cream from Scratch Ice Cream, sharing the same space for the ultimate Wisconsin comfort food experience.

Menu Highlights

The Archie: This signature double smash burger is a true masterpiece that demands your full attention. American cheese flows like lava over the top of the exposed caramelized patty followed by a deluge of minced onions, creating a burger so generously loaded that you’ll need multiple napkins to tackle it. The house-made special sauce adds a creamy tang that perfectly complements the rich beef flavors.

PBR Onions: These aren’t your ordinary burger onions. The sweetness is enhanced by the light, yeasty flavor of the beer, creating a uniquely Wisconsin touch that adds both flavor and nostalgia to every bite. The onions are sautéed to perfection and spread generously across the burgers.

The Linda: Don’t overlook this vegetarian option that proves plant-based can be just as satisfying. This vegetarian black bean and corn burger offers up plenty of Southwestern flavor, along with a crisp exterior from being smashed just like the beefy smash burgers. Topped with chipotle aioli and all the fixings, it delivers bold flavors that even meat lovers appreciate.

Panko Onion Rings: They are some of the best ones I’ve ever had, if not the best ones, according to local food critics. These golden rings provide the perfect crispy contrast to the rich burgers, with a light panko coating that never feels heavy or greasy.

Fresh Daily Grind: The meat at Archie’s is ground fresh daily at Becher Meats, the butcher shop next door, also owned by Lutz. Any unused meat is returned and turned into fresh beef sticks. This commitment to freshness means your burger has never seen a freezer, resulting in superior texture and flavor.

Crinkle Cut Fries: We expected the crinkle cut fries to be standard issue, but they were well-salted, crunchy on the outside, and soft within. These nostalgic-style fries deliver the perfect balance of crispy exterior and fluffy interior.

Atmosphere & Décor

Retro Diner Vibes: With its checkered flooring, classic red stools, and neon lighting, Archie’s has the diner aesthetic down pat. The space perfectly captures that 1950s soda fountain feeling while maintaining a fresh, modern cleanliness that makes dining comfortable.

Record Collection Charm: Record labels adoring the walls and even a record player behind the counter add authentic vintage touches throughout the space. The vinyl collection creates conversation starters and enhances the nostalgic atmosphere without feeling forced or kitschy.

Connected Ice Cream Experience: Archie’s partners with local ice cream gem Scratch Ice Cream, creating a seamless flow between the burger counter and ice cream shop. This dual concept allows you to easily transition from your main meal to dessert without leaving the building.

L-Shaped Counter Seating: The counter is “L” shaped with comfortable stools, providing an intimate dining experience where you can watch the burger-making process while enjoying conversation with fellow diners and the friendly team behind the counter.

Other Considerations

Moderate Pricing: The basic burger (the #1, $8). Get the #2 and you’ll get another crispy lacey beef patty ($10.50). Order The Archie and you’ll get the #2 PLUS shredded lettuce, tomato and housemade burger sauce ($12). The pricing reflects excellent value for the quality ingredients and generous portions you receive.

Becher Street Food Corridor: Becher Street is a mini mecca for great food. Beginning with the West Allis Cheese Shop and then Becher’s Meats, the location puts you in the heart of West Allis’s thriving food scene. You could easily spend an entire day exploring Mark Lutz’s various establishments along this strip.

Convenient Parking: There is street parking available both on the main road and along side streets. You should be able to find somewhere relatively close.

Counter Service Style: Archie’s has a bar-ordering system instead of a dedicated table service. Ordering was fast and easy, and the food arrived at our table within ten minutes. This efficient system keeps wait times minimal while maintaining the casual, approachable atmosphere.

Hours & Accessibility: The restaurant operates Wednesday through Sunday with extended weekend hours, making it perfect for both quick weekday lunches and leisurely weekend dining experiences.
