Picture this: a husband-and-wife team spent four months eating nothing but ice cream, traveling the country to study the craft, and researching techniques until they perfected their dream recipe.
That dream became reality when Marty and Janelle opened Janarty’s in September 2018, and downtown Smyrna hasn’t been the same since.
What started as late-night conversations over episodes of Shark Tank and Chopped has blossomed into an award-winning destination where every single item—from the ice cream to the waffle cones to the baked goods—is made completely from scratch.
This isn’t your average scoop shop. You’re getting artisanal super premium ice cream crafted in what the industry calls a microcreamery, churned just two quarts at a time to guarantee unmatched freshness and quality.
Incredible Flavor Selection
The Rotating Menu: Here’s where things get exciting. While Janarty’s has created over 100 different flavors since opening, you’ll only find eight available at any given time.

Pricing Reality: Let’s be honest about cost. Janarty’s sits on the higher end for ice cream—you’re looking at a premium price for premium quality. A single scoop runs around $5-6, while a waffle cone bowl with two scoops and toppings can exceed $7-8.
That said, you’re paying for small-batch artisanal ice cream with no fillers or preservatives, made just gallons at a time using Belgian chocolate and other top-shelf ingredients. The quality justifies the expense, though budget-conscious visitors should plan accordingly.
Portion Sizes: Be warned that one scoop might not satisfy you. The ice cream is so rich and delicious that you’ll likely want more. Many customers learn this quickly and now automatically order two scoops on return visits.
Perfect For Dietary Restrictions: The entire shop is 100% gluten-free with zero cross-contamination—a game-changer for anyone with celiac disease or gluten intolerance.
They also offer dairy-free options for those avoiding lactose. This commitment to accessibility means everyone in your group can enjoy dessert together without worry.
Parking & Location: Downtown Smyrna offers street parking that’s generally manageable, though it can get busier during peak weekend hours. The central location makes it easy to combine your visit with a stroll around the historic square.
Hours to Know: They’re closed on Tuesdays, so plan accordingly. Operating hours are typically 11:30 AM to 9:00 PM most days, extending to 10:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays during busy seasons.
When to Visit: Summer weekends draw the biggest crowds, which means you might wait a bit but also ensures maximum flavor rotation. Weekday afternoons offer a more relaxed experience with shorter lines.
Awards & Recognition: Janarty’s has won multiple local awards including Best Ice Cream, Best Milkshake, and their proudest achievement—Best Customer Service. They’re consistently recognized as a top dessert destination in Middle Tennessee.
