Southern comfort food gets an all-natural upgrade at this West Ashley neighborhood favorite that’s been championing local ingredients since before farm-to-table was trendy.
The Glass Onion opened in 2008 when three young chefs sat on Folly Beach, brainstorming names while considering Beatles songs – and “Glass Onion” just clicked.
Chef Chris Stewart, an eighth-generation Alabama native, brings authentic Southern flavors with influences from New Orleans and the Lowcountry, creating dishes that feel both familiar and exciting.
Menu Highlights
Shrimp and Grits: You’ll find this isn’t your typical Charleston version – it’s more like shrimp creole served over stone-ground Anson Mills grits, reflecting the New Orleans influence. The creamy grits are cooked long and slow with plenty of cream and butter, creating an earthy depth that’s almost addictive.
Fried Chicken: Guy Fieri called it “pull-apart good” on Triple D, and he wasn’t wrong. The Tuesday night fried chicken platters draw crowds with perfectly crispy skin and juicy meat that falls off the bone. Pair it with the flash-fried collards for the full experience.
