What started as a retirement bee project over 30 years ago has blossomed into one of South Carolina’s most unique hands-on zoo experiences, where education meets exotic animal encounters.

Bee City Zoo combines the wonder of beekeeping education with an interactive petting zoo featuring everything from wallabies and coatimundis to serval cats and miniature horses.

Incredible Animal Encounters

Hands-On Interactions: You’ll be amazed by how close you can get to the animals here. Feed alpacas and emus right from your hand, watch them eagerly respond to your presence, and experience genuine connections with creatures you’d never expect to meet in South Carolina.

Exotic Residents: The zoo houses an incredible variety of animals including ring-tailed lemurs, wallabies, coatimundis, serval cats, cavies, and miniature horses. You’ll also find traditional farm animals like turkeys, chickens, quail, and pheasants.

Animal Food Available: You can purchase special feed to interact with most animals, from monkeys to camels. The experience of feeding these diverse creatures creates unforgettable memories, especially for children.

Kangaroo Encounters: One of the highlights many visitors rave about is the opportunity to actually hug a kangaroo – an experience you simply won’t find at most traditional zoos.

Reptile House: The zoo features a collection of snakes, lizards, and other reptiles, offering close-up educational encounters with species often overlooked in traditional exhibits.

Educational Bee Experience

Working Honey Farm: The bee education component sets this zoo apart completely. You’ll learn about the critical importance of honeybees through interactive displays and a working honey farm that’s been operating for over three decades.

Glass Observation Hive: The classroom features a remarkable glass observation hive where you can see worker bees, drones, and even the queen bee in action. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the complex world of honeybee colonies.

Miniature Bee City: One of the most charming features is the miniature honeybee town with intricately painted hives designed to look like a quaint village. This whimsical display makes learning about beekeeping both fun and memorable.

High-Quality Honey Products: You can purchase pure honey, honey butter, honey spreads, and bee pollen – all produced right on site from their active beehives.

Family-Friendly Atmosphere & Setting

Perfect Size for Kids: The zoo is designed with young children in mind – not overwhelming in size but packed with interactive experiences. You can easily see everything in a few hours without little ones getting tired.

Hands-On Philosophy: Unlike traditional “look but don’t touch” zoos, Bee City encourages interaction. The animals are socialized for human contact, and staff members are knowledgeable about each animal’s personality and preferences.

Rural Countryside Setting: Located in peaceful Cottageville, the zoo offers a serene escape surrounded by rural landscapes. The setting feels like visiting a working farm where exotic animals just happen to live.

Other Considerations

Very Affordable Pricing: Admission is quite reasonable compared to larger zoos, typically ranging from $8-12 per person, making it an excellent value for the unique experiences offered.

Gift Shop & Café: You’ll find a well-stocked gift shop with bee-themed items and honey products, plus a café for refreshments during your visit.

Parking & Accessibility: Free parking is available on-site, and the zoo is designed to be accessible for visitors with mobility needs.

I’ve lived in Asheville for the past 12 years, but North Carolina has always felt like home. And I've always loved traveling! I enjoy taking the long way just to see what’s out there. When I’m not writing, I’m out with my old Nikon, digging through record bins, or planning my next road trip.
