When pitmaster Anthony DiBernardo rebuilt Swig & Swine Summerville after a devastating fire, he didn’t just restore a restaurant – he created something even better.

This isn’t your typical barbecue joint that cuts corners with gas or electric smokers.

Here, custom-built wood-fired smokers burn continuously, with hardwood logs added every 15 minutes to maintain perfect smoking conditions that create the legendary bark and tender interiors that have food critics raving.

Smoky Meat Perfection

Whole Hog BBQ: Unlike many barbecue restaurants, Swig & Swine Summerville has the space and equipment to smoke entire hogs, creating pulled pork with incredible depth of flavor. The meat pulls into long, tender strands that showcase hours of careful smoking.

Brisket Excellence: The beef brisket features a beautiful bark (the coveted crispy exterior) while maintaining tender, juicy meat inside. The well-rendered fat creates that perfect “tug” texture that barbecue enthusiasts seek.

St. Louis Style Ribs: These aren’t your average ribs – they’re massive, meaty cuts that require serious appetite commitment. The half-rack portions are generous enough that most people take home leftovers.

Smoked Wings: These wings have achieved legendary status among locals, with their perfect balance of smoky flavor and crispy skin. The smoking process creates depth that traditional fried wings simply cannot match.

House-Made Sausage: The kitchen creates their own sausage that perfectly complements the other smoked offerings, featuring bold flavors and excellent texture from quality ingredients and proper preparation.

Incredible Sides & Desserts

Brunswick Stew: This traditional Southern side dish gets expert treatment, featuring a rich, hearty consistency with perfectly balanced flavors that complement the smoky meats.

Mac & Cheese: Creamy, rich, and substantial enough to serve as a meal on its own. The generous portions and quality preparation make this a standout among barbecue side dishes.

Baked Beans: These aren’t your typical canned beans – they’re slow-cooked with careful attention to seasoning and texture, creating a perfect accompaniment to the barbecue meats.

Chocolate Cream Pie: This isn’t just dessert – it’s a revelation. Multiple reviewers have declared it the best they’ve ever tasted, with rich chocolate flavor and perfect texture that provides the ideal end to a barbecue feast.

Peach Cobbler: When available, this seasonal dessert showcases fresh peaches in a traditional Southern preparation that earns rave reviews from visitors.

Atmosphere & Experience

Casual BBQ Joint Vibe: The interior creates that perfect barbecue restaurant atmosphere – comfortable, unpretentious, and focused on the food rather than fancy décor. You’ll feel like you’re at a true pit master’s establishment.

Outdoor Seating: The patio provides additional space and lets you enjoy your meal while soaking up the South Carolina weather. It’s perfect for groups and family gatherings.

Large Screen TVs: Multiple screens positioned throughout the restaurant ensure you can catch the game while enjoying your barbecue feast, creating that ideal sports bar and smokehouse combination.

Family-Friendly Environment: The relaxed atmosphere welcomes families while maintaining the authentic barbecue joint feel that serious meat lovers appreciate.

Other Considerations

Pricing & Value: While not the cheapest barbecue in town, the quality justifies the cost. A half-rack of ribs with two sides runs around $20, which represents fair value for the quantity and quality you receive.

Craft Beer Selection: The beverage program features craft beer options that pair excellently with the smoky flavors. The beer selection complements rather than competes with the barbecue focus.

Group Accommodations: The restaurant handles large parties well, making it an excellent choice for family gatherings, work events, or celebrations where everyone wants to eat well.

I’ve lived in Asheville for the past 12 years, but North Carolina has always felt like home. And I've always loved traveling! I enjoy taking the long way just to see what’s out there. When I’m not writing, I’m out with my old Nikon, digging through record bins, or planning my next road trip.
