Hope Goddard Iselin, known as “the great lady of racing,” spent decades creating this tranquil paradise before bequeathing it to Aiken in 1970. Today, visitors discover the same peaceful beauty she cultivated, from the deodar cedars she planted to the wetlands that attract ducks, turtles, and fish.

Garden Highlights

Century-Old Live Oaks: The magnificent live oaks, believed to have been planted by Mrs. Iselin herself, create a cathedral-like canopy throughout the gardens. Their sweeping limbs and moss-draped branches provide natural shade and create the most photographed spots in the gardens.

Foundation Fountains: Three magnificent fountains mark where the Iselin mansion once stood, allowing you to imagine the grand life that once flourished here. Two stone greyhounds still guard the former entrance, watching over visitors as they once watched over the estate.

The Dollhouse: This charming structure was the Iselin children’s playhouse and schoolhouse, ordered straight from a Sears & Roebuck catalog in the early 1900s. It’s now home to the Aiken Garden Club Council and decorated beautifully during Christmas.

Wetlands Walkway: The 1993 addition of wetlands created a natural filtration system while adding a tranquil marshland setting. A perimeter walk reveals diverse wildlife including plants, trees, ducks, turtles, and fish.
