Founded in 1773 on the eve of the American Revolution, The Charleston Museum holds the distinction of being America’s first museum.
For over two and a half centuries, this institution has been discovering, preserving, and sharing the rich history of Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry.
What started as a scientific collection inspired by distinguished South Carolinians like Charles Cotesworth Pinckney and Thomas Heyward Jr. has evolved into the most comprehensive assemblage of South Carolina historical materials in the nation, offering visitors an air-conditioned oasis of learning in downtown Charleston.
