Journey beneath Ohio’s surface to discover crystalline formations and vibrant mineral displays that have been captivating visitors for over 125 years.

Discovered in 1897 and opened for tours in 1925, these underground chambers maintain a constant 54 degrees year-round while showcasing some of America’s most spectacular cave formations.

The vivid colors created by iron, copper, and other minerals coating the limestone walls have earned Ohio Caverns the designation as “America’s Most Colorful Caverns.”

Tour Options & Formations

Natural Wonder Tour: This one-mile, 50-55 minute guided tour takes you through sections discovered after 1925, featuring the cave’s most impressive formations. You’ll see the Crystal King—Ohio’s largest stalactite—along with countless colorful formations and flowing draperies.

Historic Tour: The three-quarter-mile, 45-minute tour begins at the original discovery site, exploring areas that were first toured from 1897 to 1925. You’ll ride a shuttle bus to the original entrance and experience the cave as early visitors did.

Crystal King Formation: Ohio’s largest stalactite dominates one chamber, surrounded by countless smaller formations that create an underground cathedral of natural beauty.

Underground Marvels

Colorful Mineral Displays: Iron oxide creates brilliant oranges and reds, while copper minerals produce stunning blues and greens. These vibrant colors coating the limestone walls create an almost otherworldly experience unlike typical cave tours.

Stalactites & Stalagmites: Thousands of formations in various stages of development showcase the ongoing geological processes. Some connect to form massive columns, while delicate “soda straws” hang from the ceiling like crystal chandeliers.

Constant Temperature: The caves maintain 54 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, providing comfortable touring conditions regardless of outside weather. This consistency also helps preserve the formations and creates the perfect environment for crystal growth.
