Picture standing at the edge of a massive limestone canyon, but instead of being carved by rushing water, these grooves were slowly etched by a glacier over 18,000 years ago.
The glacial grooves on Kelleys Island are the largest and most easily accessible glacial grooves in the world, scoured into solid limestone bedrock by the great ice sheet that covered part of North America.
This National Natural Landmark draws visitors to Kelleys Island from all around the globe, offering a rare opportunity to witness one of nature’s most spectacular geological phenomena up close.
The preserved grooves measure an impressive 400 feet long, 35 feet wide, and up to 15 feet deep, creating an outdoor museum that tells the story of our planet’s ice age past.
