Two brothers with vastly different personalities created matching limestone masterpieces that transport visitors straight into Ohio’s most elegant Victorian era.
The Piatt Castles were built in the 1860s-1870s by Civil War veteran brothers Abram and Donn Piatt, wealthy farmers and businessmen who constructed their Gothic Revival mansions just one mile apart on their family’s expansive Ohio farmland.
Mac-A-Cheek (Abram’s home, completed in 1871) and Mac-O-Chee (Donn’s home, completed in 1879) showcase elaborate woodwork, hand-painted frescoed ceilings, and three-story architecture that truly resembles medieval castles transplanted to the American Midwest.
Architectural Marvels & Victorian Craftsmanship
Limestone Castle Construction: Both castles were built using limestone quarried directly from the family farm, along with timber processed at their own sawmill. This self-sufficiency created buildings that perfectly reflected the local landscape while achieving the Gothic Revival grandeur the brothers desired.
