Must-See Animal Experiences

Giraffe Feeding at Heart of Africa: You’ll be face-to-face with these friendly giants as you feed them one of their favorite treats…lettuce!

The experience happens on an elevated deck where these towering beauties lean down to meet you at eye level. Their very long tongues wrapping around the leaves creates magical photo opportunities that’ll have your social media buzzing.

You’ll discover their distinctive patterns—some have large, solid chestnut brown spots, separated by a network of bright white lines while others sport more jagged-edged markings.

The underwater viewing windows provide jaw-dropping perspectives as these Arctic giants glide gracefully beneath the surface just inches from your face.

Manatee Coast Sanctuary: This isn’t just an exhibit—it’s an active rehabilitation facility for injured manatees.

You’ll witness gentle giants slowly cruising through crystal-clear waters alongside stingrays and tropical fish. If you have the opportunity, I recommend purchasing the two small pieces of fish and feed the sting rays. It’s an interaction I won’t soon forget.

Cheetah Run Experience: Heart of Africa showcases the world’s fastest land animal in action. Saw a tiger feeding up close, a cheetah playing with a ball and rolling over during animal demonstrations that highlight their incredible athleticism and playful personalities.

The exhibits/enclosures are well thought-out and provide adequate space and natural environment for the animals as well as good viewing for the guests.

Natural Habitat Design: Rather than traditional cages, animals live in spacious environments designed to mimic their wild homes.

Instead of fences, habitats are either recessed and separated via rock walls, or on ground level and separated by the rock walls and glass.

Excellent Facilities: Bathrooms were clean, and there was a good variety of animals along with fun rides for the kids. Multiple dining options, gift shops, and shaded rest areas are strategically placed throughout the grounds.

Other Considerations

Admission Pricing: Adult tickets run around $22-25 for non-Franklin County residents, with children and seniors receiving modest discounts.

Franklin County residents enjoy significant savings thanks to local tax support. 21.99 for senior and adult 16.99 child if you Live close by season member ship 135 family of Four good for a year and zoo lights The pricing represents solid value considering the scope and quality of exhibits.

Parking Logistics: Parking is $10 and can be purchased online or at the parking booths upon arrival. The large parking lot includes tram service to the entrance during busy periods, making access convenient even when lots are full.

Time Planning: Allow a lot of time for your visit. Our family can usually go through museums and zoos relatively quickly but this zoo even took us longer than we expected which is a good thing. Plan for a full day—most visitors spend 5-6 hours to see everything properly.

Family-Friendly Features: The zoo welcomes picnics and outside food, making it budget-friendly for families. Pack a picnic basket, enjoy a leisurely day at the zoo. I was quite pleased that the Columbus Zoo allows you to bring a cooler of outside food and drinks.

Seasonal Considerations: They have a lot of special events through the year, like the Lantern Festival, Wildlights, and Boo at the Zoo. The spectacular winter holiday lights display and summer lantern festival create unique experiences beyond regular zoo visits.
