Imagine stepping directly into Georges Seurat’s famous pointillist masterpiece “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte”—that’s exactly what happens at Columbus’s extraordinary Topiary Park.
This 7-acre living recreation uses carefully sculpted shrubs and trees instead of paint dots to create the world’s only public park based on a single work of art.
Created by artist James T. Mason in 1988, this three-dimensional interpretation transforms Seurat’s Seine River scene into an Ohio creek-side experience you can walk through and explore.
Living Masterpiece Experience
54 Human Figures: Meticulously shaped topiaries represent every person from Seurat’s painting, with the tallest figure standing 12 feet high. You’ll walk among Victorian-era families, children, and couples frozen in their Sunday leisure activities.
Animal Companions: Eight boats, three dogs, a monkey, and a cat complete the scene, all crafted from living shrubs that change subtly with the seasons while maintaining their recognizable forms.
