This 4,800-acre wilderness sanctuary showcases one of North Carolina’s most dramatic natural landmarks – a mile-long stretch of 150-foot crystalline cliffs that tower majestically above the rushing waters below.
Just 40 miles southwest of Raleigh, this geological marvel sits perfectly positioned along the fall line where the hard Piedmont rocks give way to the softer coastal plain.
You’ll find yourself transported into a landscape that feels more like the Appalachian Mountains than eastern North Carolina’s typical farmland terrain.
The park’s strategic location creates unique geological features including ancient rapids, remnants of historic locks and dams, and diverse ecosystems that support everything from mountain laurel blooms to diverse wildlife populations.

The Iconic Raven Rock Trail: Your must-do experience centers on the park’s namesake 2.6-mile loop trail that leads directly to the towering rock formation. The Scenic Overlook: After climbing back up from Raven Rock, continue to the elevated overlook platform positioned 150 feet above the Cape Fear River. Hidden Rapids & Historical Sites: Venture onto the Fish Traps Trail to discover the remnants of the Northington Lock and Dam, destroyed by an 1859 hurricane. You’ll also find excellent fishing spots and can explore multiple rapids including Fish Traps Rapids that create natural fishing holes and scenic water features.
Mountain Laurel Loop: Choose from three skill-level options on this trail system designed for mountain biking enthusiasts, though hikers enjoy it equally. The paths wind through dense rhododendron thickets and areas bursting with mountain laurel blooms during peak season.
