Adventure beckons around every boulder-strewn corner at this magnificent 18,000-acre wilderness preserve.
South Mountains State Park stands as North Carolina’s largest state park, where the gentle Piedmont landscape dramatically gives way to the rugged Appalachian foothills.
Located just an hour’s drive from Charlotte and 55 miles east of Asheville, this natural playground offers an authentic backcountry experience that feels worlds away from civilization.
The park’s crown jewel is the spectacular 80-foot High Shoals Falls, where rushing waters cascade over ancient granite formations into crystalline pools below.
With elevations reaching 3,000 feet and nearly 50 miles of trails threading through diverse ecosystems, you’ll discover everything from designated trout waters along Jacob Fork River to pristine wilderness areas still recovering from the transformative 2016 wildfire that actually renewed the forest’s vitality.
