Nick’s Old Fashioned Hamburger In Lexington Proves Simple Food Can Still Be The Best

Published: August 4, 2025

Lines stretch out the door, music pumps from vintage speakers mixing Sinatra with Wu-Tang Clan, and the flat-top grill sizzles with an almost musical rhythm.

This isn’t your typical roadside burger stop – it’s Nick’s Old Fashioned Hamburger House, where pure chaos meets burger perfection in the most delightful way possible.

Since Ralph Brauser opened the doors in 2010, this small Davidson County gem has become a nationally recognized destination, earning spots on Reader’s Digest’s “Best Small-Town Restaurants Across America” list and making burger pilgrims wait 45 minutes just for a taste of what many call North Carolina’s finest burger.

What started as a planned hot sub shop transformed into something magical when a noncompete clause forced founder Ralph Brauser to “punt” his original concept.

Named after Brauser’s son Nick, this family-owned establishment now churns out 5,000 hand-pattied burgers weekly under current owners Jeremy and Casey Haynes, who bought the restaurant in 2020 exactly ten years to the day after it first opened.

Menu Highlights

The Classic Smashburger: You’ll taste the difference immediately – these aren’t your run-of-the-mill patties. Each burger starts with never-frozen, locally sourced beef that’s hand-pattied and smashed on the flat-top grill to order. The result is a beautifully caramelized exterior with a juicy, tender interior that practically melts in your mouth.

Big Nick Mac: This signature creation has earned national recognition and represents everything that makes Nick’s special. Think of it as their answer to a certain golden arches classic, but executed with fresh, high-quality ingredients and that distinctive smash-burger technique that creates perfect crispy edges.

Pimento Cheese Perfection: The locally sourced pimento cheese isn’t just a topping – it’s a creamy, tangy revelation that transforms any burger into a Southern masterpiece. You’ll find this distinctive cheese gracing everything from burgers to the popular Honey Chicken Sandwich.

Hand-Cut Crinkle Fries: These aren’t frozen fries from a bag. The golden, crispy crinkle-cut fries come perfectly seasoned with their signature seasoned salt that keeps you reaching for more. They achieve that perfect balance of crispy exterior and fluffy interior that makes you understand why people drive from neighboring counties.

House-Made Chili: This isn’t cafeteria chili – it’s made fresh daily in-house and adds a hearty, flavorful dimension whether you order it on fries, over a hot dog, or ladled onto your burger. The rich, meaty texture shows the care that goes into every batch.

Patty Melt Mastery: You’ll discover that their patty melt breaks traditional rules but delivers incredible results. It might be messier than you expect, but the combination of perfectly cooked beef, melted cheese, and grilled bread creates something memorable.

Old-School Hot Dogs: These aren’t afterthoughts on the menu. The hot dogs get the same attention to quality as everything else, served on perfectly steamed buns with crisp white slaw and house-made chili that elevates them far above typical fast-food fare.

Atmosphere & Décor

Nostalgic Time Machine: You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back into the 1950s the moment you walk through the door, complete with checkered floors and vintage décor that screams classic American diner. Then the eclectic soundtrack hits – one moment you’re hearing Frank Sinatra, the next it’s Red Hot Chili Peppers or Notorious B.I.G., creating an unexpectedly perfect soundtrack.

Barely Controlled Chaos: The energy is infectious and unlike anywhere else. You’ll witness what looks like organized madness during rush times – phones ringing, lines out the door, orders flying – but somehow everything works with clockwork precision. The atmosphere buzzes with excitement that makes the wait part of the experience.

Indoor & Outdoor Seating: You’ll find simple tables and chairs inside that get the job done, but the real gem is the covered outdoor seating area. The picnic-style tables under shelter create a perfect spot for enjoying your meal, especially on those beautiful North Carolina days with gentle breezes.

Community Tables: You’ll notice the tables are covered with advertisements for local businesses, reinforcing that this place is truly woven into the fabric of the community. It’s not just décor – it’s a reflection of the deep local connections that make Nick’s feel like home.

Other Considerations

Pricing Sweet Spot: You’ll find the prices refreshingly reasonable for the quality you receive. Three people can enjoy a full meal for around $43, making it an exceptional value considering the fresh, never-frozen ingredients and made-to-order preparation.

Weekend Rush Strategy: You’ll want to arrive close to opening time on weekends if you want to avoid the longest waits. The place gets packed quickly, especially on Saturdays, but most agree the experience is worth every minute of waiting.

Parking Practicality: You’ll find adequate parking, though it can fill up during peak times. The restaurant sits along Old US Highway 52, making it easily accessible but expect some searching for spots during the busiest periods.

Family-Friendly Atmosphere: You’ll see families making memories with young children everywhere you look. The casual environment welcomes everyone from toddlers to grandparents, and kids especially love the ice cream options.

I’ve lived in Asheville for the past 12 years, but North Carolina has always felt like home. And I've always loved traveling! I enjoy taking the long way just to see what’s out there. When I’m not writing, I’m out with my old Nikon, digging through record bins, or planning my next road trip.
