Madagascar’s most endangered species find sanctuary and hope at the world’s largest and most diverse lemur colony outside their native habitat.

The Duke Lemur Center houses over 200 lemurs representing 14 species in the world’s most important lemur research and conservation facility outside of Madagascar.

For over 50 years, this remarkable center has combined cutting-edge scientific research with public education to protect Earth’s most endangered group of mammals while offering visitors unprecedented opportunities to observe these fascinating primates in naturalistic forest habitats.

Extraordinary Lemur Encounters

14 Different Species: You’ll observe ring-tailed lemurs, sifakas, mouse lemurs, and eleven other species that represent the incredible diversity of Madagascar’s unique primate evolution. Each species displays distinct behaviors, vocalizations, and social structures that showcase millions of years of isolated evolution.

Over 200 Individual Lemurs: There are individual lemurs with distinct personalities and stories, many born at the center as part of critical breeding programs. The large population allows for complex social dynamics and natural behaviors rarely seen in traditional zoo settings.

I’ve lived in Asheville for the past 12 years, but North Carolina has always felt like home. And I've always loved traveling! I enjoy taking the long way just to see what’s out there. When I’m not writing, I’m out with my old Nikon, digging through record bins, or planning my next road trip.
