What started as a backhoe operator’s artistic vision in 2005 became one of North Carolina’s most controversial roadside attractions.
The massive concrete sculpture known as “Reminiscing” features 40-foot-long women’s legs positioned in an unmistakably provocative pose, inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s iconic subway grate scene from “The Seven Year Itch.”
Created by local artist Ricky Pearce using a unique technique called earth casting, this 80-ton sculpture stands 17 feet high and stretches across both sides of a residential street in Henderson.
While the initial community reaction ranged from shock to outrage, the sculpture has endured for nearly two decades as an undeniable conversation starter and unexpected tourist draw.
