This isn’t your typical zoo experience – it’s the magic that awaits at Why Not An American Ark, a hidden gem nestled just outside Monroe that’s been captivating families since 1996.

Founded by Amy and Jeff Wylie after a spontaneous countryside drive where Jeff famously replied “Why Not!” to Amy’s suggestion to purchase the land, this unique sanctuary has grown into something truly special.

Home to the beloved Two by Two Petting Zoo, the property offers a scenic, open, relaxed atmosphere where guests can enjoy the outdoors and interact with nature across multiple ponds and trails.

Incredible Animal Encounters

Exotic Animal Paradise: You’ll meet an impressive variety of rescued animals that call this sanctuary home. Everything from zebras and camels to wallabies, peacocks, bobcats and sheep roam the grounds, with many being rescues from people who once thought they could care for exotic animals. The diversity is remarkable – you might find yourself face-to-face with emus, foxes, miniature horses, and even talking parrots!

Hands-On Feeding Experience: The feed buckets you can purchase are generous and more than enough to feed all the animals. You can feed everything from camels to zebra to emu, creating unforgettable moments as these magnificent creatures take treats right from your hands. The animals clearly expect and love their daily interactions with visitors.

Baby Animal Magic: One visitor got to hold an entire 3-week-old miniature horse, showcasing the incredible hands-on experiences available. You’ll encounter baby pigs, bunnies, and other young animals that are particularly engaging for children and animal lovers alike.

Guided Walking Tours: The hour-long guided tours cost $11 per person (cash) or $12 per person (card), with children under 2 free. Your guide will lead you through the property, introducing you to each animal and sharing their unique stories.

Trail Rides & Outdoor Adventures

Horseback Trail Rides: With advance reservation, you can take guided trail rides through the scenic countryside. The scheduling process is excellent – owners text you through it and are very accommodating. The cross country course is amazing, and there’s even a horse playground for those wanting extended equine activities.

Pony Rides: Younger visitors can enjoy pony rides, perfect for first-time riders or those who want a gentler introduction to horseback experiences.

Beautiful Walking Trails: The property features walking trails, beautiful places to sit, and a lake with cute little turtles swimming around, making it perfect for leisurely exploration beyond just the animal encounters.

Atmosphere & Setting

Rustic Farm Charm: This isn’t the commercialized zoo – the animals are family to the owners and it shows. You’ll experience authentic farm life with all its imperfections, which many visitors find refreshingly genuine. The place gives you a break from electronics and lets you connect with nature in a meaningful way.

Friendly Canine Companions: About 15-20 dogs greet visitors and follow throughout the entire tour. These brown dogs freely roam the ranch and are friendly, though visitors should be prepared for enthusiastic canine attention if they’re not dog lovers.

Scenic Natural Beauty: The view from the front porch is absolutely nature at its best, with multiple ponds scattered across the rolling farmland creating picture-perfect moments. The enclosures are described as magical, showing the care put into creating beautiful spaces for the animals.

Other Considerations

Budget-Friendly Pricing: At around $11-12 per person, this represents excellent value for a hands-on animal experience that can last several hours. Many reviewers describe it as “a bang for your buck” compared to larger commercial zoos where animal interaction is limited.

Operating Hours: Open Wednesday through Friday 11am-3pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 11am-5pm, closed Monday and Tuesday. Last gate entry must be made before closing, but you can stay as long as you wish.

Cash Preferred: The facility prefers cash payments and is not near an ATM, so come prepared with cash for the smoothest experience.

Perfect for All Ages: The attraction works well for families with special needs children and offers experiences that engage toddlers through grandparents. You can bring your camera and a picnic to stay for a while.

Genuine Animal Sanctuary: All proceeds go to the feeding and care of the inhabitants, many of whom are rescues. The animals are all well taken care of, and the enclosures show real care, making this a place where you can feel good about supporting their mission.

I’ve lived in Asheville for the past 12 years, but North Carolina has always felt like home. And I've always loved traveling! I enjoy taking the long way just to see what’s out there. When I’m not writing, I’m out with my old Nikon, digging through record bins, or planning my next road trip.
