Picture a space where rescue cats reign supreme, each with their own backstory of survival and second chances.
Catfé Montclair brings the global cat cafe trend to downtown Montclair, transforming a second-floor walk-up into something much more meaningful than just another coffee spot.
Opening in January 2024, this feline sanctuary partners with Homeless Tails rescue organization to give cats rescued from Newark, Irvington, and East Orange streets a comfortable home while they wait for their forever families.
Owner Tara Ford, a physician assistant by day, turned her longtime dream into reality after experiencing cat cafes herself.
The mission goes beyond providing cute photo ops—every purr, every playful pounce, and every gentle head bump helps socialize these rescue cats, preparing them for adoption. You’re not just visiting; you’re actively participating in their rehabilitation journey.

The Feline Residents: The rotating cast of adoptable cats ranges from playful six-month-old kittens to mature, affectionate four-year-olds like Aaron, a tuxedo cat who loves being held.
Some cats are naturally social butterflies, while others arrive needing more patience and gentle encouragement to trust humans again. Each cat comes fully vetted, spayed or neutered, dewormed, and vaccinated—ready for adoption when the right match appears.
Interactive Cat Time: You’ll find an array of toys available to engage the cats, from feather wands to laser pointers. Some cats might curl up beside you on the bench seating, while others prefer independent play among the cat trees scattered throughout the space.
The cats’ moods shift with the energy in the room—when it’s calm, expect naptime; when visitors are playful, the cats often follow suit. The personalities shine through once you spend time observing them.
Complimentary Beverages: Your admission includes unlimited access to the self-serve beverage bar stocked with coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. It’s worth noting this isn’t a full-service cafe—the drink station is simple and functional.

Reservation-Only Format: Walk-ins are technically welcome based on availability, but reservations fill up quickly, especially on weekends. You’ll book either a 30-minute or 60-minute time slot through their website.
The controlled timing ensures the cats never feel overwhelmed by too many visitors at once, maintaining the calm environment that makes socialization successful.
Special Events & Programming
Yoga With Cats: These popular sessions sell out rapidly, requiring additional dates to meet demand. You’ll bring your own mat and flow through guided poses while adoptable cats wander freely around you. Some might investigate your downward dog or curl up on your mat during savasana—it’s unpredictable and delightful.
Sound Bath Healing: During these ancient Tibetan-inspired sessions, you can bring your yoga mat or pillow and lie down while a practitioner creates soothing frequencies using singing bowls. The cats roam freely, and the vibrations reportedly help even the shyest cats emerge from their shells. It’s meditation amplified by purring.

The Space & Atmosphere
Bohemian Lounge Vibes: The hardwood floors and clean, airy layout create a relaxed bohemian aesthetic. Cozy nooks dot the space, while large windows overlooking Bloomfield Avenue provide natural light and street-watching opportunities for both cats and humans.
Cat trees, scratching posts, and climbing structures give the felines vertical territory to claim as their own.
Spotless Maintenance: You’ll notice the cleanliness immediately—floors stay tidy, water bowls remain fresh, and the space never smells like a shelter. The cats appear healthy and well-groomed, evidence of the veterinary oversight required since the space is zoned as an animal shelter.
Sock-Only Policy: Shoes come off at the door, and you’ll need to wear clean socks throughout your visit. This keeps the space hygienic for both cats and visitors. The hardwood floor stays comfortable enough for those who can sit down, though seating is primarily benches rather than floor cushions or bean bags.

Things Worth Knowing
Pricing Value: At $12 for 30 minutes or $24 for a full hour (with complimentary beverages included), the admission sits in the affordable range compared to entertainment options in the area.
Special events like yoga or sound baths run around $40. The pricing directly supports cat care and rescue operations, giving your visit added purpose beyond simple entertainment.
Cat Availability: The number of cats present varies based on recent adoptions—which is ultimately the goal.
Sometimes you might encounter a full house of felines; other times, successful adoptions mean fewer cats are available for interaction. Patient visitors who let the cats approach on their own terms tend to have the most rewarding experiences.
