When a West Duluth businessman named Bert Onsgard built a simple pen for his pet deer Billy in 1923, he probably never imagined he was creating what would become one of America’s most enduring wildlife sanctuaries.
A century later, the Lake Superior Zoo stands as a testament to community spirit and animal conservation, having weathered everything from the Great Depression to devastating floods while maintaining its commitment to bringing you face-to-face with nature’s most magnificent creatures.
This AZA-accredited zoo has evolved from its humble beginnings into a modern conservation center housing over 300 animals representing 140 different species across 19 picturesque acres in West Duluth.
You’ll discover everything from majestic Amur tigers to playful river otters, all while walking through scenic terrain dotted with rocky hills, towering pines, and the gentle flow of Kingsbury Creek.
