When Aaron Rieland’s first homebrew literally exploded in his basement closet in 2001, he couldn’t have imagined that this catastrophic beginning would eventually lead to one of central Minnesota’s most beloved craft breweries.

After shelving his brewing dreams for eleven years, Rieland rediscovered his kit during a garage cleaning session and decided to give brewing another shot.

This time, with better knowledge and patience, his beers turned out significantly better. By 2015, Bad Habit Brewing Company opened its doors in downtown St. Joseph to standing room only crowds, becoming the first brewery in the town in over 100 years.

You’ll find yourself in an extraordinary brewing destination where experimental flavors meet small-town charm. The brewery has become so popular that they expanded to a larger 8,000 square foot location in 2019, just 550 feet from their original taproom, complete with a wrap-around patio that seats approximately 200 people.

What makes Bad Habit truly special is their commitment to constant innovation – they feature several hand-crafted flagship brews plus an ever-rotating selection of specialty and seasonal offerings, ensuring every visit brings something new to discover.

Signature Brews & Rotating Selections

Dark Addiction Stout: The brewery’s most celebrated beer since opening day features high-quality 2-row and chocolate malts, combined with lactose milk sugars and cocoa nibs from Ghana to produce a decadent, slightly sweet, yet approachable stout. You’ll be surprised how many first-time craft beer drinkers become converts after trying this smooth, chocolatey creation.

Habitual IPA: Easily recognized as part of their “unbelievable IPA selection”, this flagship offers the perfect balance of hop character without overwhelming bitterness. The brewery has built a reputation for their innovative IPA variations, including their famous milkshake IPAs.

Milkshake IPAs: Perhaps their most unique creation, these feature heavy pectins, lactose milk sugars, and fruit, topped with Madagascar vanilla to create a perfect well-rounded body that might make you ask for whipped cream. It’s like drinking your favorite smoothie with a hoppy twist.

Experimental Small Batches: Every week or every other week, they produce 10-15 gallon batches of off-the-wall, small batch releases. These limited offerings include everything from Tropic Like It’s Hot with passion fruit, mango, and pineapple to seasonal specialties like their raspberry wheat released for St. Joe’s Fourth of July celebration.

Double Dry Hopped Creations: Brewed with 2-row malt, malted oats, and lactose milk sugar, these thick and juicy beers pour like your favorite Saturday morning breakfast beverage, offering intense hop flavor without excessive bitterness.

Beyond Beer Options: They also offer newly introduced seltzer lines and house-made sodas including root beer and lemon soda that are kid-approved and highly rated.

Atmosphere & Unique Setting

Open Brewery Concept: You can enjoy your beer while sitting directly in front of the tanks where it was made, as the brewery is open to the taproom so customers can see the brewing process. This transparency creates an intimate connection between you and your beverage.

Industrial Meets Comfort: The space features an excess of natural light, high ceilings, combination of industrial and natural elements, and a bold black, red, and white color scheme. The design includes lots of huge windows, old-wood floors, creating a rustic, down-home cozy ambience with plank tables and chairs.

Expansive Outdoor Space: The wrap-around patio provides both cozy and open feelings, with the spacious taproom and adjoining outdoor space making for comfortable gathering. The patio area is particularly enjoyable for those who love outdoor dining.

Historic Building Character: Originally a bank with a drive-through canopy still attached and 12-inch thick concrete walls of the vault turned into a walk-in cooler, the building adds unique architectural interest to your visit.

I love writing and I love Minneapolis! My favorite places to explore are charming small towns, vibrant arts scene, and hidden gems anywhere outdoors. Fall foliage with a good documentary is my version of heaven.
