Banning State Park transforms what was once a bustling sandstone quarry town into one of the state’s most captivating outdoor destinations.
Located just minutes off I-35 near Sandstone, this 6,000-acre park delivers an incredible combination of thrilling whitewater rapids, fascinating historical ruins, and pristine hiking trails that wind through dramatic rock formations.
The park’s unique character stems from its remarkable past – from 1896 to 1912, the Banning Sandstone Company employed 500 workers who carved massive pink sandstone blocks from these very cliffs.
Today, you’ll explore the weathered remains of this ghost town while enjoying some of Minnesota’s most spectacular natural scenery along 10 miles of the wild and scenic Kettle River.
