This Historic Excelsior Gem Serves World-Class Walleye & Craft Cocktails In A 140-Year-Old Brick Building

When chef Eli Wollenzien traded corporate kitchens for community connection, he discovered gold in Excelsior’s historic Water Street corridor.

Coalition Restaurant transforms a 140-year-old brick building into something magical—where locally sourced ingredients meet global inspiration in dishes that make you pause mid-bite to appreciate the craftsmanship.

The restaurant opened in June 2014 after Wollenzien and co-owner Deacon Eells completely reimagined the space that formerly housed Biella Restaurant.

These childhood friends from River Falls, Wisconsin, returned to small-town roots with big culinary dreams, creating Excelsior’s first craft cocktail destination. Their philosophy centers on collaboration—chefs, farmers, brewers, and diners all working together to create memorable experiences.

Menu Highlights

The Walleye: This Minnesota classic receives elevated treatment that consistently impresses diners. The fish arrives with expertly crafted sauces that enhance rather than mask its delicate flavor, paired with seasonal vegetables that showcase the restaurant’s commitment to local sourcing.

Brussels Sprouts Appetizer: This crowd-pleasing starter transforms the humble vegetable into something crave-worthy. The sprouts get roasted to crispy perfection with complementary flavors that convert even the most hesitant vegetable skeptics.

Burrata with Olive Tapenade: This updated version of the classic appetizer showcases how Coalition elevates familiar dishes. The creamy cheese paired with Mediterranean olive tapenade creates a perfect balance of rich and briny flavors.

Craft Cocktail Program: Coalition brought the first craft cocktails to Excelsior, featuring spirits from boutique distilleries like North Shore Gin and Cedar Ridge Iowa Bourbon. Each drink showcases thoughtful ingredient selection and expert preparation.
