Nearly five decades after its revolutionary opening, the Minnesota Zoo continues redefining what it means to experience wildlife in their natural habitats.
When it opened on May 22, 1978, it was fairly revolutionary in its exhibit design, becoming one of the first zoos to organize its animals by their living environment as opposed to their species.
Sprawling across 500 wooded acres in Apple Valley, this state-supported sanctuary houses over 5,300 animals representing more than 500 species from five continents. What makes this destination extraordinary goes beyond its impressive animal collection.
The crown jewel is the recently opened Treetop Trail – the world’s longest elevated pedestrian loop that takes you up to 32 feet above the ground for bird’s-eye views of tigers, moose, and bison. Built ingeniously atop the old monorail track, this 1.25-mile walkway offers an entirely new perspective on both the zoo’s animals and Minnesota’s natural landscapes.
