The Little River Railroad offers one of Michigan’s most authentic heritage railroad experiences, where the romance of steam-powered travel comes alive through the dedicated work of passionate volunteers.
Founded in 1972 with the mission to preserve and operate historic railroad equipment, this nonprofit organization has created something truly special in south-central Michigan.
The railroad operates from the beautifully restored 1883 Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad depot, a stunning brick structure that still features its original doors, ticket windows, and slate roof.

Engine #110 – The Star of the Show: This remarkable 4-6-2 Pacific-type locomotive holds the distinction of being the smallest steam locomotive of its kind ever built for standard gauge railroad. Constructed by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1911, this 58-ton beauty originally served the Little River Lumber Company in Tennessee, hauling passenger trains and even funeral trains through the Smoky Mountains.
After being abandoned for decades, dedicated railfans rescued #110 and brought it back to life, where it now serves as the crown jewel of the fleet.
Tank Engine #1: When #110 undergoes maintenance, the charming 0-4-0 tank engine takes over duties. This mysterious locomotive has a frame and wheels dating back to 1908, though its exact origins remain part of railroad lore. Despite being smaller than #110, this plucky engine delivers authentic steam power and plenty of character.
Vintage Passenger Cars: You’ll ride in genuine heavyweight combine cars, streamlined coaches from the former Milwaukee Road, and even converted cattle cars transformed into open-air observation cars.
