Chocolate becomes pure artistry the moment you step through Mokaya’s doors on Grand Rapids’ vibrant Wealthy Street.
Founded in 2016, this Mesoamerican-inspired chocolate boutique transforms ancient cacao traditions into modern masterpieces that capture both your eyes and palate.
Everything here gets crafted in-house, by hand, and in small batches with fresh ingredients, using no preservatives or artificial flavors. You’ll discover why locals consistently consider this one of Michigan’s premier chocolate destinations.
The name itself tells a fascinating story – Mokaya comes from an ancient Mesoamerican culture predating the Mayans, dating back to at least 1900 B.C., where the Mokaya or “Corn People” created drinks from cacao.
Archaeologists found bowls containing traces of chocolate compounds that may represent the earliest evidence of chocolate in North America, and the shop borrowed imagery from these ancient artifacts for their logo.
