Located in downtown Pontiac’s beautifully restored 1891 firehouse, this remarkable museum houses thousands of authentic artifacts that transport you straight back to the golden age of the Mother Road.
You’ll discover everything from vintage gas station memorabilia to the actual vehicles that made Route 66 famous, all while standing in the very place where countless road trip dreams began.
The museum opened its doors in 2004 as the first major Route 66 attraction heading west from Chicago, making it the perfect starting point for modern-day Route 66 explorers.
What sets this place apart is its incredible collection of Bob Waldmire’s legendary vehicles and the world’s largest painted Route 66 shield mural adorning the museum’s back wall.

Bob Waldmire’s Road Yacht: The crown jewel of the collection is Bob Waldmire’s converted 1966 school bus, known as the “Road Yacht.”
You can actually walk through this fascinating home-on-wheels and see his handmade furniture, rock collection, Jethro Tull vinyl records, and even his custom-built toilet and sauna.
Waldmire, often called the Johnny Appleseed of Route 66’s revival, lived in this bus while traveling the highway and creating the whimsical artwork that helped spark renewed interest in the Mother Road.
Waldmire’s VW Van: Inside the museum, you’ll find Waldmire’s iconic Volkswagen van nicknamed “Waldmore,” which served as inspiration for Fillmore the van in Pixar’s Cars movie.
The van still displays the original boxes underneath where Waldmire allegedly stored his personal stash, cleverly telling curious police they contained snake nests.
