This Little Red Popcorn Shack In Sycamore Has The Best Caramel Corn In Illinois

Sometimes the most extraordinary experiences come wrapped in the simplest packages.

This little red popcorn stand at the corner of State and Maple streets has been serving the community for over 100 years, making it one of Illinois’ most enduring culinary treasures.

What started as a horse-drawn wagon in the 1890s has evolved into a beloved destination where nostalgia meets innovation, one kernel at a time.

Cassie’s Popcorn Stand is a family-owned popcorn business since 1981, but its roots run much deeper into Sycamore’s history.

As early as 1893, James Elliott brought a horse-drawn wagon to the northwest corner of State and Maple streets and sold popcorn, eventually becoming a permanent fixture that has witnessed downtown Sycamore transform around it while remaining a constant source of sweet comfort.

Signature Flavors That Define Cassie’s Magic

Sycamore Style: The popular “Sycamore-style” mix, in which Oltman melts caramel over cheese flavored popcorn. “It’s one of our most popular,” Oltman said. “People just love it. But you will need a napkin.”

Cassie’s has the butteriest caramel and the cheesiest cheese in their Sycamore style, creating a sweet-and-savory combination that locals consider a must-try. This isn’t your typical Chicago mix – it’s Cassie’s own interpretation that perfectly balances the richness of melted caramel with sharp cheese flavors.

Unicorn Popcorn: The Unicorn Popcorn Rocked My World! The best flavored popcorn around!

The unicorn popcorn and cotton candy were our favs when visitors stop by for their magical treat. This whimsical creation captures childhood wonder in every colorful bite, making it an instant favorite among both kids and adults seeking something truly special.

Cotton Candy Delight: Cassie’s also regularly offers flavors like cotton candy, bringing carnival magic to your everyday snacking.

The cotton candy flavor transforms ordinary popcorn into a nostalgic treat that tastes like summer festivals and childhood memories.

Classic Caramel Corn: You’ll discover that Cassie’s has the butteriest caramel around, creating a rich, smooth coating that clings to each kernel without being overly sweet.

All of the flavors come from “real” ingredients, including actual butter, blended together with the popcorn with a “big wooden spoon.”

Creative Seasonal Options: In the fall, for instance, the stand will sell Oltman’s take on caramel apple and pumpkin spice, which includes a white chocolate drizzle over pumpkin flavored popcorn. You’ll also find creative selections like cookies and cream, bacon, and birthday cake, ensuring there’s always something new to discover.

Specialty Popcorn Balls: The stand also regularly offers popcorn balls in a range of flavors, including Oreo, Snickers, cherry and strawberry, among others. These handheld treats offer a fun, mess-free way to enjoy Cassie’s flavors on the go.

Cassie’s Jack: Some of Oltman’s favorites to make, she said, are her take on Cracker Jack – which she called “Cassie’s Jack” – featuring a blend of caramel corn and peanuts, bringing a homemade twist to this classic combination.

Atmosphere & Character

Historic Red Stand: The little red popcorn stand at the corner of State and Maple streets immediately catches your eye with its charming vintage appearance. The little red wagon has been around for as long as I can remember.

Cassie has made it her own and continues the great service and popcorn we have come to expect. The stand’s compact size creates an intimate, cozy atmosphere where every visit feels personal.

Cultural Icon Status: My cousins who live in Sycamore say this place is a cultural icon, and you’ll quickly understand why once you experience the warm community atmosphere surrounding this tiny establishment.

People who have moved away and come back to live in the community again or visit… stop by the stand and tell me how happy they are this place is still here… It just helps them feel like they’re home.

Welcoming Aroma: As you approach, you can’t help but be enticed by the sight of freshly popped kernels in an array of enticing flavors.

The intoxicating smell of fresh popcorn and caramel draws you in from blocks away, creating anticipation before you even reach the window.

Intimate Shopping Experience: Inside, only a handful of shelves and a seat can fit in the shack.

Customers walk up to see what’s been freshly popped on the menu that day and make their picks. This creates a charming, old-fashioned shopping experience where you can see and smell everything before making your selection.

Other Considerations

Pricing & Value: The popcorn offerings fall into the affordable treat category, with prices that reflect the quality and freshness of ingredients used. Last time I was there I ordered 4 family bags to take home and eat for the next few days, indicating that the generous portion sizes provide excellent value for money.

Cassie’s comes in different size options and can be perfect for a group movie night, special occasion, or just to treat yourself.

Operating Hours: Oltman said she aims to open the stand Monday-Friday, 4 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.

However, I’ve stopped several times and they weren’t open, so it’s wise to check their Facebook page before visiting. Regulars know to check the popcorn stand’s Facebook page to learn whether the stand will be open or closed on a particular day.

Fresh Daily Preparation: Oltman pops the white popcorn fresh each day at the stand. All other flavors and styles are prepared and bagged in advance in her popcorn prep building at her home on Somonauk Street.

This ensures maximum freshness and quality in every bag you purchase.

Perfect for Gifts: “And people do love giving our popcorn as gifts,” she said. Oltman said she then opens the stand periodically until Christmas, to satisfy the demand for popcorn as gifts. The beautiful packaging and unique flavors make Cassie’s popcorn an ideal present for any occasion.

Family-Friendly Atmosphere: The stand caters to all ages, with flavors ranging from traditional to whimsical that appeal to both children and adults. Cassie Oltman’s elementary school-aged grandson, Cayson Oltman helps out during special events, showcasing the multi-generational family involvement that makes this place special.

Parking & Location: Located right downtown at the corner of State and Maple, the stand is easily accessible during your stroll through Sycamore’s charming downtown area.

The central location makes it a perfect stop while exploring other local attractions.
