Coffee shops come and go, but finding a bakery where you can actually buy bread still warm from the oven?
That’s pure magic in today’s world. Amazing Breads and Cakes opened in November 2017, filling what locals describe as a “noticeable vacancy” in downtown Des Plaines.
What started as two Polish sisters pursuing their dream has become a beloved community fixture where the aroma of fresh-baked goods greets you from the sidewalk.
Sisters Grace Iwanicki-Chlastawa and Urszula Chlastawa arrive at 3 a.m. each day to make their baked goods from scratch, using traditional Polish recipes and organic ingredients. This European-influenced bakery proves that authenticity matters – in France, bakers are told they either excel with bread or sweets, not both, but Amazing Bread and Cakes does both.
Standout Breads & Pastries
The Sourdough: You’ll taste the difference immediately in their crusty sourdough loaves. These oval-shaped loaves aren’t made in traditional rectangular pans and can be sliced fresh behind the counter. The flavor is complex and tangy without being overwhelming.
