Behind the wooded shores of Lake Springfield lies one of Illinois’ most charming family attractions. Henson Robinson Zoo officially opened on August 29, 1970, born from the dreams of prominent Springfield citizen Henson C. Robinson who advocated for its creation.
What started as a community vision has blossomed into a compact but impressive zoo housing over 96 species of native and exotic animals from Australia, Africa, Asia, and North and South America.
The zoo participates in scientific research studies and conservation efforts in addition to providing a fun and educational environment for people of all ages.
You’ll discover this isn’t your typical roadside attraction—it’s a carefully curated collection of fascinating wildlife that consistently surprises visitors with its quality and diversity.
Many visitors find the zoo to be a good value for its affordable admission price, often described as a nice way to spend a few hours, especially for families with young children.
