What started as a movie set in a nearly forgotten railroad town has transformed into one of Georgia’s most treasured dining destinations, where you can literally sit where Idgie and Ruth served their famous fried green tomatoes.
The magic began in 1991 when director Jon Avnet discovered this sleepy town along the Ocmulgee River. The old general store, built in 1927 by Edward L. Williams Sr., became the perfect backdrop for their fictional Whistle Stop, Alabama.
When filming wrapped, local resident Robert Williams saw an opportunity to keep the dream alive, partnering with friend Jerie Lynn Williams to transform the movie set into a real, functioning cafe that still serves that signature dish every single day.
