Welcome to The Frosty Caboose in Chamblee.
It’s an ice cream parlor where nostalgia meets indulgence in the most delightful way possible.
And this isn’t just your ordinary ice cream shop – because it’s housed inside an authentic 1980s cherry red Missouri Pacific train caboose that was transported all the way from Iowa and lovingly converted into what locals now call “Atlanta’s Train Spotting Capital.”
Owner Pam Kachmar opened this unique attraction in 2009 after losing her corporate job, partnering with her brother to bring something special to Chamblee – a city whose motto is “A City on the Right Track.” What started as a creative community project has blossomed into a beloved 15-year tradition that draws families from across the Atlanta metro area.
The 180-square-foot caboose sits perfectly positioned along the Norfolk Southern rail line, offering front-row seats to passing locomotives while you enjoy handcrafted frozen treats that are made locally to support the community.

The Flavor Selection: You’ll discover an impressive rotating selection of up to 36 flavors at any given time, ranging from classic favorites to adventurous seasonal creations.
The most popular choice among visitors is cookies and cream, but don’t miss out on standout flavors like bourbon truffle, key lime pie, lemon custard, and chunky salted caramel. During warmer months, you can indulge in refreshing seasonal options like peach, mango, and cotton candy explosion that disappear as quickly as they arrive.
Premium Quality: Every scoop showcases the richness and creaminess that comes from using locally-sourced ingredients. You’ll taste the difference immediately – this isn’t mass-produced ice cream but rather artisanal quality that will spoil you for other ice cream shops. The texture is consistently smooth and luxurious, with flavors that pack authentic punch rather than artificial sweetness.
Specialty Sundaes: The menu features creative sundae combinations with train-themed names that add to the whimsical experience. Try the “Crack in the Track” sundae, inspired by Thomas the Tank Engine stories, or build your own masterpiece with rich hot fudge and creamy peanut butter sauces. The brownie sundaes are particularly impressive, allowing you to choose up to three scoops with all the fixings.
Beyond Ice Cream: You’ll also find an array of frozen alternatives including sherbet, Italian ices, frozen yogurt, and non-dairy options to accommodate different dietary needs. For those wanting something savory, they serve authentic New York-style Sabrett hot dogs – complete with spicy mustard and onions in red sauce – a nod to owner Pam’s New York City upbringing.

Train-Watching Paradise: The real magic happens when you’re enjoying your ice cream and suddenly hear the rumble of an approaching freight train. You’ll have prime viewing spots from outdoor benches and the caboose’s side decks, making every visit a potential train-spotting adventure. The MARTA line also passes overhead, and on clear days, you can even spot planes taking off from nearby DeKalb-Peachtree Airport.
Authentic Caboose Charm: The exterior features an animated design that makes it look like the train is chugging along with mounds of ice cream melting over its sides – a playful touch designed by the owner’s husband. Inside, the compact space maintains its railroad authenticity while efficiently housing all the ice cream equipment, creating an intimate and uniquely memorable ordering experience.
Family-Friendly Vibes: You’ll find this spot buzzing with energy, especially during peak hours when families gather to watch trains and enjoy treats together. The music playing in the background adds to the cheerful atmosphere, and there’s something genuinely heartwarming about watching kids’ faces light up when a train approaches while they’re mid-lick of their ice cream cone.
Historic Location: The caboose sits in Old Town Chamblee, also known as Antiques Row, giving you the opportunity to explore other local attractions before or after your ice cream stop. The location perfectly captures the small-town charm that Chamblee is known for while being easily accessible from the greater Atlanta area.
Other Considerations
Pricing & Value: You’ll find the prices reflect the premium quality – it’s definitely pricier than chain ice cream shops, but the generous portions, local ingredients, and unique experience make it worthwhile. Expect to pay around $1-10 per person, with most treats falling in the middle of that range. There’s also a sweet deal for little ones: children 36 inches or shorter receive a free cone.
