Most People Don’t Know About This Atlanta Restaurant With A Secret Garden Courtyard In The Middle Of The City

  • Attraction: La Grotta Ristorante Italiano
  • Location: 2637 Peachtree Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30305
  • Industry: Italian Restaurant
  • Website: https://www.lagrottaatlanta.com

Picture stepping off a bustling Buckhead street, taking an elevator down into what feels like a secret portal to Northern Italy.

La Grotta literally means “the cave” in Italian and was named such for its cavernous and warm setting. Since 1978, this family-owned restaurant has been Atlanta’s most enchanting culinary secret, tucked away in the basement level of a residential condominium complex.

La Grotta has been voted the Best Italian Restaurant by Atlanta Magazine for 16 years in a row, the AAA Four Diamond Award recipient for 15 years and long time winner of the Di Rona Award.

What makes La Grotta extraordinary isn’t just its awards or longevity—it’s the magical transformation that happens the moment you arrive. You’ll find yourself in an intimate dining room with rustic brick walls and windows overlooking a lush courtyard garden that transports you straight to the Italian countryside.

Signature Dishes & Culinary Highlights

Dover Sole Meuniere: The Dover sole and the veal chop are two items that have been on the menu since we opened, and probably have not changed. This classic preparation showcases the restaurant’s commitment to timeless Northern Italian cuisine, prepared with the finesse that only comes from decades of perfection.

Grilled Veal Chop: The crown jewel of La Grotta’s menu delivers exceptional tenderness and flavor. Veal is flavorful and tender, able to be cut by the merest caress of the knife. Served with fresh mint pesto, asparagus, and fingerling potatoes, this dish exemplifies why the restaurant has maintained its stellar reputation for nearly half a century.

Sacchetti di Formaggio e Tartufi Neri: The shaved truffles on the Sacchetti di Formaggio e Tartufi Neri was the highlight of my evening. Just perfect. These delicate “beggar’s purses” filled with Fontina cheese and black truffles come bathed in a creamy Marsala wine sauce with white truffle essence and toasted walnuts.

House-Made Pastas: You’ll discover an array of fresh pasta creations, from pappardelle ribbons with lobster in white wine cream sauce to goat cheese stuffed ravioli. Pillow plump gnocchi is a standout. The kitchen’s flexibility means they’ll often create off-menu pasta dishes when ingredients are available.

Carpaccio: The carpaccio is notably creamy in texture, representing the restaurant’s mastery of traditional Northern Italian appetizers alongside options like Vitello Tonnato.

Seasonal Specialties: The mushroom risotto is particularly good in fall when enhanced by a few shavings of white truffle. The menu changes seasonally to reflect the freshest local ingredients, with Chef Antonio working directly with local farms.

Atmosphere & Romantic Appeal

Garden Courtyard Setting: The restaurant’s most magical feature is its view of the lush courtyard garden. You can dine indoors with windows overlooking this green oasis, or enjoy meals directly on the outdoor patio surrounded by verdant landscaping that feels worlds away from urban Atlanta.

Intimate Cave-Like Ambiance: Gentle lighting and fine black-and-white photographs craft an ambience that is easy on the eyes, and the noise level is equally easy on the ears. The subterranean location creates a cozy, grotto-like atmosphere perfect for special occasions.

Romantic Destination: Patrons in the mood for romance will hardly find a more apt spot than this edition of La Grotta, where gentlemen popping the question are a frequent event and the positive responses they get equally common. The combination of dim lighting, intimate seating, and garden views makes this a premier choice for anniversaries, engagements, and milestone celebrations.

Old World Elegance: The dining room features rustic brick walls, white tablecloths, and carefully curated Italian artwork that creates an authentic European atmosphere without feeling stuffy or pretentious.

Other Considerations

Dress Code Standards: At La Grotta, we pride ourselves on being one of the few places in Atlanta where our patrons can dress up and have a night out on the town. For this reason, we do not allow patrons to wear baseball caps, beanies, sports attire including t-shirts, tennis shoes, shorts, or jeans with holes in our dining room. Business casual is acceptable, but jackets are preferred for gentlemen.

Pricing Expectations: As a long-standing AAA Four Diamond establishment, you’ll find pricing reflects the premium quality and service. Expect fine dining prices that align with other top-tier Atlanta restaurants, but the quality and portion sizes provide excellent value for special occasions.

Wine Program Excellence: Guests will also find an extensive wine list with Italian and New World wines (over 400 different labels). Hard-to-find Italian wines set this classic Italian spot, located on the lower level of a Buckhead condominium, apart from the madding crowd.

Parking Convenience: Complimentary valet paring is offered in front of The Peachtree House for the convenience of our guests. You can also find self-parking in the adjacent church parking lot.

Reservation Requirements: This popular destination stays consistently busy, even on weeknights. Making reservations well in advance is highly recommended, especially for weekend dinners and special occasions.

Best Times to Visit: While the restaurant maintains its charm year-round, fall visits offer special treats like white truffle shavings on seasonal risotto dishes.
