Striking Building Design: The museum’s exterior features a dramatic elliptical copper dome evocative of an African ceremonial headdress, distinctive yellow stucco finish that matches “edo,” a naturally occurring West African clay, and black and white columns symbolizing the diverse backgrounds of the museum’s founders. The building’s architecture is noteworthy, with a stunning design that reflects the traditions and heritage of African American culture.
Spacious Modern Galleries: The current 49,500-square-foot facility replaced the original 8,500-square-foot building in 2015, providing ample space for both permanent and rotating exhibits. You can easily spend about two hours exploring both floors, with accessible exhibits and interactive displays that make the learning experience engaging.
Convenient Museum District Location: Located in Macon’s museum district near the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, you can easily make this part of a larger cultural exploration of downtown Macon.
