Native American Folklore: According to local legend, a great Native American chief once battled a giant alligator that had been terrorizing the village near Lake Wales.
Both the chief and the alligator died in their epic struggle, and the chief was buried on the north side of the hill. Some believe their spirits continue battling in the afterlife, causing the strange gravitational effects.
Pioneer Discovery: The hill’s mysterious properties were first noticed by pioneer mail riders in the 1800s who found their horses struggling while traveling what appeared to be downhill.
These circuit riders coined the name “Spook Hill” due to the eerie sensation. Later, when citrus workers drove wagons around the area, they noticed their mule teams straining while going downhill with heavy loads.
Modern Recognition: Starting around 1950, Spook Hill became a significant tourist attraction during the post-World War II automotive boom.
