Picture this: you’re wandering through what feels like a Venetian palace, complete with Gothic arches and ornate terra cotta details, but instead of canal views, you’re gazing out at the sparkling waters of Sarasota Bay. Ca’ d’Zan, meaning “House of John” in Venetian, was built in the mid-1920s as the winter retreat of circus mogul John Ringling and his wife Mable Burton Ringling.
Completed in 1926, this Mediterranean Revival mansion features an eclectic array of architectural styles including Venetian Gothic, Italian Renaissance, Moorish, and Spanish-inspired elements.
With 36,000 square feet and 56 rooms, the Ringlings’ opulent winter home was meant to impress and quickly became a social hub in Sarasota.
The mansion stands as a testament to the American Dream during the Roaring Twenties, when a couple from humble Midwestern origins created their own slice of European grandeur on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Architectural Marvels & Interior Treasures
The Stunning Facade: The Venetian Gothic mansion is truly eye-catching with its decorative pink sandstone exterior and beautiful multi-colored marble terrace, lavishly decorated with wrought-iron balconies, tile decoration, and ornate Moorish-style windows.

Current Status: The second floor of Ca’ d’Zan is currently not accessible due to damage from 2024’s Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The mansion sustained significant damage including flooding in the basement and damage to the waterfront terrace. However, the first floor remains open for tours, and restoration work is ongoing.
Tour Options: A small group guided tour explores all five floors and culminates with panoramic views atop the Belvedere Tower. This tour is 70 minutes long, limited to 8 participants, and requires climbing over 85 steps with no elevator or seating available. The basic admission includes only the first floor, but many visitors recommend paying extra for the enhanced experience.
