Note: The Butterfly Rainforest and Florida Museum of Natural History are currently closed for a large-scale expansion project that began March 24, 2025. The museum anticipates reopening in 2026. During the closure, the butterflies and other animals continue to be cared for by staff.

The Butterfly Rainforest at the Florida Museum of Natural History transforms a 6,400-square-foot screened exhibit into an enchanting tropical paradise where hundreds of free-flying butterflies from around the world create pure magic for visitors of all ages.
Located on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, this living exhibit features more than 50 butterfly and moth species at any given time, with a continuous population of over 700 butterflies.
You’ll wander through lush tropical landscapes planted with vibrant flowering plants, towering trees, and cascading waterfalls while butterflies float through the air around you, creating what many visitors describe as a truly life-changing experience.

Interactive Butterfly Experiences: You’ll come face-to-face with exotic free-flying butterflies that may land delicately on outstretched hands, bright clothing, and colorful blooms.
The butterflies are attracted to vibrant colors, so wearing bright clothes dramatically increases your chances of having these magnificent creatures choose you as their temporary perch.
Live Butterfly Releases: View the LIVE butterfly spotlight Monday through Friday at 2 p.m., weather permitting, where newly emerged butterflies are released throughout the day as they emerge from chrysalises.
This educational presentation allows you to witness the magical moment when butterflies take their first flight in the rainforest habitat.

Butterflies generally begin flying when air temperatures reach 65 degrees, with peak activity occurring on sunny days in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Live Web Cams: Can’t visit in person? Two live cameras provide 24/7 views of the exhibit – the Canopy Cam placed high in the treetops and the Chrysalis Cam showing butterflies emerging from their cocoons.
Best Visiting Times: The butterflies become most active on sunny days when temperatures reach the mid-60s or higher. Morning and early afternoon visits typically offer the most butterfly activity, while late afternoon provides more peaceful, contemplative experiences.
