Some South Floridians joke that there are only two seasons: when Knaus Berry Farm is open and when it’s closed.

This seasonal treasure open just 6 months out of the year in Homestead’s agricultural Redland district has been drawing devoted fans since 1956.

And it’s creating what can only be described as a cult-like following for their legendary cinnamon rolls.

Every November through mid-April, when the farm reopens its doors, you’ll witness something remarkable – people willing to wait hours in line under the Florida sun for a taste of what many consider the world’s best cinnamon rolls.

What started as a simple roadside strawberry stand run by brothers Ray and Russell Knaus has evolved into a South Florida institution.

The German Baptist family (often mistaken for Amish) has maintained their traditional approach to farming and baking, creating an authentic Old World experience that feels worlds away from urban Miami, despite being just a short drive south.

The farm operates with a charming simplicity that includes cash-only transactions and a “Lord willing” approach to their seasonal schedule that has become part of their endearing character.

Bakery Highlights That Keep Crowds Coming Back

The Famous Cinnamon Rolls: You’ll understand the hype the moment you bite into one of these warm, gooey masterpieces. Each roll is generously sized and arrives fresh from the oven with that perfect balance of cinnamon sweetness and buttery dough. At just $2 each, they’re an incredible value that has remained surprisingly affordable despite their legendary status. The rolls are best enjoyed warm, and you’ll often catch them right out of the oven when you visit.

Pecan Rolls That Rival the Cinnamon: Don’t overlook the pecan rolls, sold in trays of 10 for $20.85. These heavenly creations feature the same irresistible dough base but are crowned with a generous layer of pecans that add a delightful crunch and nutty richness. Many regulars actually prefer these over the famous cinnamon variety, making them the farm’s hidden gem.

Herb Dinner Rolls: These savory gems at $6.50 per dozen have their own devoted following. The herb-infused rolls provide a perfect contrast to all the sweet treats and make excellent accompaniments to any meal. They’re warm, fluffy, and aromatic with just the right amount of seasoning.

Seasonal Pies and Cakes: The guava pie ($13.45) offers a tropical twist that celebrates Florida’s unique flavors, while their black bottom cake and pineapple upside-down cake showcase the family’s diverse baking talents. You can also special order authentic shoo-fly pie ($13.50), a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch dessert that connects to their German Baptist heritage.

Fresh Strawberry Shakes: Made with strawberries grown right on the property, these thick, rich shakes are the perfect cool-down treat after waiting in line. The strawberry flavor is intensely fresh and natural, with just the right amount of sweetness. They’re available from 8:00am to 5:15pm and represent the farm’s agricultural roots beautifully.

Specialty Jellies and Jams: The guava jelly has earned particular praise from visitors, offering another taste of tropical Florida. These homemade preserves capture the essence of the farm’s commitment to quality and traditional methods.

Atmosphere & Farm Experience

Authentic Rural Setting: You’ll find yourself transported to a simpler time as you enter the Redland agricultural area. The farm maintains its rustic, old-fashioned charm with unpaved parking areas and simple buildings that reflect its working farm heritage. The property feels genuinely rural despite being relatively close to Miami’s urban sprawl.

Seasonal U-Pick Experience: When strawberries and tomatoes are ripe (typically late December through early April), you can enjoy the hands-on experience of picking your own fresh produce. The U-Pick fields operate from 8:00am to 4:00pm on weekdays and Saturdays, offering families a chance to connect with where their food comes from.

Traditional Family Operation: The sight of the Knaus family members in their traditional German Baptist attire – bonnets, long beards, and plain cotton clothes – adds to the authentic atmosphere. Their commitment to traditional methods and values creates a unique cultural experience that’s rare in modern Florida.

Well-Organized Lines: Despite the crowds, you’ll appreciate how efficiently the farm manages the flow of customers. Separate lines for bakery items, produce, and milkshakes help streamline the process, and the staff keeps things moving at a steady pace even during peak times.

Other Considerations

Cash-Only Policy: Remember to bring actual money, as the farm accepts cash only. This old-school approach is part of their charm, but it can catch unprepared visitors off guard. There are no credit card options, so plan accordingly.

Strategic Timing: You’ll have the best experience visiting on weekdays, particularly Tuesday through Friday mid-morning. Saturdays can mean waiting 2-6 hours in line, while weekday visits might have no wait at all. The lines tend to decrease after Thanksgiving and especially after New Year’s.

Exceptional Value: The pricing remains remarkably reasonable for the quality you receive. Individual cinnamon rolls at $2 each and dozen herb rolls at $6.50 represent outstanding value, especially considering the handmade quality and reputation.

Limited Season Intensity: Since the farm is only open six months per year, there’s always an underlying urgency to visit before they close again in mid-April. This seasonal exclusivity adds to the excitement but can also contribute to the crowded conditions.

Family-Friendly Destination: The combination of u-pick activities, farm atmosphere, and treats makes this an ideal family outing. Children enjoy the novelty of picking strawberries while adults appreciate the authentic baked goods and nostalgic farm experience.

Parking Considerations: The unpaved parking area can accommodate the crowds, but arriving early in the day ensures easier parking and shorter waits. Weekend parking fills up quickly, so patience is essential during peak times.
