Picture discovering a treasure trove where nearly 600,000 shells from around the world tell ancient stories of the sea, while live octopuses dance behind glass and children squeal with delight as they touch real mollusks.

The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium stands as America’s only museum dedicated entirely to shells and the fascinating creatures that create them, transforming what could be a simple collection into an immersive underwater adventure.

Originally opened in 1995, this unique Sanibel destination has rebuilt itself stronger than ever after Hurricane Ian’s devastating impact, reopening in February 2023 with fresh exhibits and renewed passion.

Located on an island renowned as one of the world’s three premier shell-collecting destinations, the museum perfectly captures both the scientific wonder and natural beauty that makes Sanibel a shell lover’s paradise.

Living Wonders & Interactive Discoveries

Giant Pacific Octopus: The museum’s crown jewel is undoubtedly its playful and active Giant Pacific Octopus that captivates visitors of all ages. You’ll find yourself mesmerized watching this intelligent creature interact with enrichment objects, showcasing the remarkable problem-solving abilities of these eight-armed marvels. These creatures have eight arms, three hearts, and blue blood, making every encounter feel like meeting an alien from our own planet.

Touch Pool Experiences: You’ll get your hands wet in two large interactive touch tanks where marine biologists guide you through encounters with living mollusks. The staff expertly explains the live mollusks as you gently handle these creatures, creating connections that no textbook could provide. The touch pools feature species like Strawberry Conch, Horse Conch, California Sea Hare, and Red Abalone.

Beyond Shells Living Gallery: The Living Gallery includes a large tank of tropical fish (yes, “Nemo” is there!), two octopuses (one large and one small), a live seahorse exhibit, and over 60 species of marine life. Other popular species on view include a Two-Spot Octopus, Caribbean Two-Spot Octopus, Flamingo Tongue, Giant Clam, Disco Clam, Queen Conch, and Lined Seahorse.

Daily Programs: Daily onsite experiences include Gallery Talks at 11am where you’ll learn fascinating facts about mollusks from the museum’s marine biologists. The educational programming extends beyond the walls with guided beach walks with museum naturalists who identify shells and teach mollusk biology.

Interactive Learning: You’ll find newly-redesigned informational panels throughout the exhibits, plus videos, large touchable shells, dioramas, and a growth series of Junonia shells that illuminate the biology and behavior of mollusks.

Shell Collections & Cultural Exhibits

World-Class Collection: The museum houses nearly 600,000 shells representing specimens from around the globe, though many shells on show are from Florida, and a substantial number are from Sanibel and Captiva islands since Sanibel Island is one of the best seashell collecting spots in the world (comparable to Jeffreys Bay in Africa and the Sulu Archipelago in the Pacific).

Notable Collections: You’ll discover a collection of Pacific Ocean cowries and cones donated by actor Raymond Burr, who owned an island in the Fijis, and who led the efforts to raise funds to build the museum. The museum features specimens ranging from massive goliath conch, lightning whelk and Atlantic trumpet triton to delicate local treasures.

Sailors’ Valentines: Among the most beloved exhibits are the sailors’ valentines (19th-century shell art that Barbadian women designed for visiting sailors to take home to loved ones), showcasing the romantic intersection of natural beauty and human creativity.

Cultural History: You’ll explore a depiction of what life was like for the Calusa Native Americans, who once lived near the Southwest Gulf and used shells for tools and building material, connecting modern shell appreciation to ancient practical applications.

Rotating Displays: The second level has two rotating displays (currently one on abalone shells and one on shells in fashion), ensuring each visit offers something new to discover.

Atmosphere & Experience

Architectural Beauty: The Shell Museum is beautifully designed and creates an atmosphere that balances scientific rigor with natural wonder. There’s a repeating film on mollusks (also a nice room to sit and unwind) where you can pause and absorb the incredible diversity of shell life.

Educational Ambiance: You’ll find the museum strikes the perfect balance between being educational, well designed, and has beautiful exhibits that are interesting for diverse audiences. Shells are organized by geography and species, accompanied by easy to read interpretation.

Interactive Storytelling: A docent with a tray of shells shares with museum guests (“Shell and Tell”), creating personal connections and answering questions that bring the exhibits to life. A hallway display of up close photos of live mollusks provides stunning visual detail you’d never see in nature.

Family-Friendly Design: The museum welcomes visitors of all ages with interactive scavenger hunts that keep children engaged while adults appreciate the scientific depth.

Other Considerations

Value Pricing: Currently, entrance fees are about half price which makes visiting the museum now a great value due to ongoing post-hurricane renovations. It was $10 for seniors which was reasonable according to recent visitors who found the experience worthwhile despite some exhibits still being rebuilt.

Visit Duration: If you are someone who likes shells or loves shells, you will want to spend at least two or three hours looking at the exhibits and live tanks and films, though you could spend several hours here for those truly passionate about marine life.

Parking & Accessibility: The museum offers convenient on-site parking and has an elevator making it accessible to all visitors. Located on the main Sanibel-Captiva Road, it’s easily found and well-marked.

Post-Hurricane Recovery: While one large exhibit hall has yet to be completed in the post-Hurricane Ian renovation, there are still MANY things to see and do. The museum has used this rebuilding period to create newly-redesigned informational panels and enhanced interactive experiences.

Gift Shop: The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium Store carries a large selection of shell-related items from postcards to art and includes a terrific variety of shell books and identification guides, perfect for continuing your shell education at home.

Best for All Ages: This is a MUST-DO experience that works wonderfully for families, educational groups, and solo travelers interested in marine science. My husband and 16 year old son reluctantly went to the Shell Museum with me and they both really enjoyed it.
