For four decades, a gentle eccentric named George Phar Legler fed and housed countless unemployed men in exchange for building his fairy tale dream.
Valley of the Moon represents Arizona’s first Affiliate Membership with the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
This 3-acre storybook wonderland, hand-built between 1923 and 1963, showcases rare Spiritualist architecture and became Tucson’s first Historic Landmark in 2015.
You’ll discover concrete castles, mystical grottos, and whimsical structures that transformed one man’s spiritual vision into an enchanted realm where “Kindness is the Golden Key to Happiness.”
Unique Architectural Fantasy
Storybook Architecture: The concrete structures represent rare examples of Provincial Revivalism known as Storybook Style, popularized in 1920s California. These organic architectural details create a fairy tale atmosphere reminiscent of European folk tales brought to life in the Sonoran Desert.
